Ok so you haven’t started the greening process in your home yet and you’re not sure where to begin. The following suggestions can help you get started. Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs use less energy produce less heat and that translates to a lower electric bill. Program your thermostat. Programming your thermostat to come on just before arriving home and lowering the temperature while sleeping will cut down on energy consumption and cost. Seal your home to prevent leaking. Using chalk or weather striping around windows and doors will help to maintain the internal temperature you desire. Give your HVAC unit a tune-up. At least every 2 years have your system serviced to ensure peak efficiency. During periods of high usage be sure to change air filter monthly. A dirty filter reduces the efficiency of the unit cause it to use more energy. Purchase Energy Star® Appliances.Using high efficiency appliances will reduce the amount of energy used on each appliance, a savings that will translate over the lifetime of the appliance.
Save water.Use low-flow showerheads and aerators on faucets to reduce water usage. Out-doors landscape with indigenous plants foregoing high-maintenance plant and grass that requiring lots of water.

Buy local. Buying local saves on transportation cost, packaging materials and other valuable resources
Use low and no voc (volatile organic compounds). Low voc product reduce the irritates, allergens and harmful chemical circulating in indoor environments. You can purchase produces that are low or no voc such as paints, household cleaning supplies and carpeting. It’s also easy to make your own cleaning supplies with lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda.
Use wood alternatives and certified woods. Flooring that comes from renewable sources such as bamboos, corks, grasses, and trees, and FSC (forest stewardship council) certified woods cut down on chemicals, manufacturing cost and environmental irritation. Purchasing local can also reduce transportation cost and emissions.
Green your garden.Planting trees can add protection from the elements while aesthetically enhancing property. Planting local vegetation reduces maintenance and care cost since local plants have adapted to the local conditions. Additionally non-toxic, organic fertilizers, pesticides and other vegetation care products reduces the strain on our air, drinking water and environment. Green your transportation. Using public transportation, car pooling, walking or riding a bicycle can all put less strain on the environment. Alternative fuel vehicles can reduce harmful carbon emissions and fuel expenditure. |
